Benefits of Calcium


Your body needs calcium to build and keep strong bones. Your heart, muscles and nerves likewise need calcium to function properly.Calcium, the most common mineral within the body, plays an essential role in blood clotting, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and bone and tooth formation.

Some studies claim that calcium, along with vitamin D, may have benefits beyond bone health, perhaps avoiding cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. But evidence about such calcium health benefits isn't definitive.

Calcium from dairy products in conjunction with a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy might help keep blood pressure in check and help prevent the absorption of fat; this helps decrease blood cholesterol.

For individuals on weight-loss diets, three or more areas of dairy products a day may accelerate weight loss and could help prevent weight gain.

In a small group of studies, consuming dairy food has been related to a decreased chance of insulin resistance syndrome. Insulin resistance results in an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Calcium may require a boost from other nutrients to assist achieve these health benefits. In most studies that checked out calcium and prevention of disease, milk was the main source of calcium. In addition to calcium, milk contains potassium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin A. The extent that these other components work with calcium to prevent conditions isn't known.
